The reference to the alchemical Rebis
fantasy for string orchestra
From the Latin res bina, “twofold thing”: in the alchemical tradition, the composite being that holds opposing principles together without dissolving one into the other. The fantasy is a meditation on difference that is not resolved into identity: contrast as a form of coexistence, rather than its negation. The closing chorale does not bring closure: it leaves the door open.

An instrumental reading of the Divine Comedy as a great mandala of individuation: a vertical journey of ascent and a gradual awakening to the Self. The three canticles become three stages in a journey of purification of the soul—the nigredo of the Inferno, the heroic struggle of Purgatorio and the ascent of Paradiso—through which the individual transcends the spirit of the world in order to connect with the spirit of the depths.
